DIY Mod Dot Drinking Glasses by MAIYA

January 7, 2012 |  by  |  Blog, DIY, Guest Blogger

I know, it was a little quiet here lately! We are still in the middle of our move and internet access isn’t very reliable those days!

But- I am happy to introduce you to Capree, who shares a great DIY today. When she is not busy writing for Curbly, Wantist & 2Modern (and taking pictures of Wrigley!), she is blogging about design on her own awesome blog called MAIYA!

Hello Funkytime Friends! My name is Capree Kimball and when I’m not busy obsessively taking photos of my dog, I’m spreading joy and love all over the Internet. Specifically, you’ll find me gushing about bright colors, modern design, and my obsession with tin robots on MAIYA, Curbly, Wantist, 2Modern, and GrassrootsModern. (I LOVE THE INTERNET.)

Most importantly, though, I am thrilled to bits that Sibylle invited me to share one of my favorite DIY projects with you:

mod dot drinking glasses!

I have a seriously over-sized soft spot for all things Mid-Century Modern and couldn’t help but turn these thrift store drinking glasses into something awesome and Eames-inspired.

To make your own set of glasses, you will need:

  • drinking glasses
  • glass etching cream (I used Armour Etch)
  • contact paper
  • regular-sized hole punch
  • x-acto/craft knife or scissors
  • cutting mat (if you’re using a knife)
  • small paint brush to apply the etching cream

I’ve detailed the whole process in painstaking detail over on Curbly, so please check out that post for all my tips and tricks! The main gist of this project though is simple: punch out/cut out your design in the contact paper, apply it to the glass, then brush on the etching cream and wait. After the cream has worked its magic, simply wash it off and you’re done! Easy peasy.

You can apply this technique to just about any glass object! I love the idea of creating custom vases or mirrors and giving them as gifts! Do you have any other creative ideas for etched glass projects? What design are you excited to try? Let’s brainstorm!
