Painted Sofa

March 10, 2014 |  by  |  Before & After, Blog, DIY, Home & Decor

I’ve been looking for a sofa for the longest time and I finally found one. It was super ugly, no way I could ever leave it like this! The real challenge was the upholstery, it wasn’t really an option to re-upholster it, I’ve been there done that, and it’s a huge pain in the a** ;-) So this time, I decided to go the easy way and just paint it. Yes you can paint cushions, didn’t know?

See what I mean?!

If you want to try for yourself, follow the instructions below.

//You will need //

Wall paint (I used matte black)

Textile medium from here (Textile medium is what keeps the fabric from becoming super-stiff after you paint it)

Primer (for the trim)

Gold spray or acrylic paint

Masking tape

// Instructions //

//Step 1// Prime the wood //Step 2// Clean sofa with a damp towel and tape off the trim //Step3// Mix the wall paint and the textile medium according to the instructions on your textile medium bottle //Step4// Paint paint paint  //Step 5// Let it dry over night //Step 6// (Spray-) Paint the trim //Step 7// Sew pillow cases for the cushions in the back

And that’s it. It took one day and one night to finish it. The cost of the sofa was EUR 50, Textile medium EUR 12, Wall paint EUR 20. I had the black fabric for the pillow cases already.

  6. How durable is it after you’ve painted it? I’ve painted leather sofas before with leather-specific paint but it flaked off over a short period of time.

    • Absolutely durable, I painted it several month ago, nothing cracked, no paint comes off even when i clean it with a wet sponge.

  7. Very stylish! love it! We can’t even recognize the original one :)

  8. Hello
    Good afternoon
    I loved your idea is great, I do inspirational, I have 2 old wanted to upholster chairs but do not have much money, but from the day I saw your left hand so shocked that I started working on my chairs. Already quiete old paint (stripping) and clean, now I only need to get the textile medium, the problem is that nolo meeting. I live in Mexico City and only what I found in another state, but that will not stop me.

    I wanted to ask you about the texture of the chairs?? already dry after painting, this feels like the passing of the days??

    Thank you very much, because your project has inspired me to do things they did not think they could make. :D

  9. This is incredible- amazing job! It’s great that it does not come off when wiping down, I am assuming it also doesn’t come off on clothing? I’m picturing the reverse of dark indigo jeans on a white sofa…
